Another world: another life. As the moons drift into alignment, Chalia dreams of Kobi growing inside her, making his journey from his world to hers.
I created this animation for a competition run by M83 to get a new music video for their single "Steve McQueen". I wanted to make a piece celebrating life and the unconditional love of a mother for her unborn child, waiting for the day they will meet.
This was an incredibly challenging piece to make but the final result is possibly my favourite piece of work I have made. I illustrated each character from scratch by hand in Photoshop, and animated it all in After Effects. It made extensive use of programmatic expressions, including inverse kinematics on the character rigs. I wanted to retain a simplistic, hand drawn cutout style, while allowing the humanity and expressiveness of the story and characters to come via the animation.
There are many fine details I'm proud of, including the fact that the galaxy glowing brightly in the sky at one point is the actual M83 galaxy!
